They will use these guidelines together with their professional judgement when deciding whether to expose a patient for radiographs. For determining the need for digital imaging, it is important to review the patient's dental and medical history.

There are two types of digital imaging receptors, photostimulable or wireless charge coupled devices or complementary metal-oxide device (CMOS). CCD and CMOS convert light to electrons with different technology. These devices create pixel images which are beyond the scope this article can discuss.

The sizes of sensors are similar to film size (0, 1, 2, and 2) PSP and CCD/CMOS can be reused, but they may follow different infection control procedures. Plastic barriers should be used depending on the imaging system. Follow the instructions of each manufacturer regarding infection control protocols for any type of device. Like film, PSPs can be placed in a variety of ways. CCD/CMOS, on the other hand, are rigid and inflexible. PSPs should be handled with care. Images must first be scanned and then erased. PSPs that are not handled properly can cause scratches and image artifacts. This can lead to the need to replace the device or expose patients to excessive radiation.
CCD/CMOS rigid sensors are more difficult to use at first due to the learning curve for placement and exposure. However, once this learning curve is completed, they become more intuitive. Poor care and handling of the wire connecting rigid sensor imaging to the remote/computer can cause connection problems. Sometimes the dental xray sensor will fail, but this is less common than wire-related problems.

Inconsistent network conductivity can cause wireless dental xray sensor to have problems connecting. The CCD/CMOS sensor may produce a smaller field of vision than film or PSP. Therefore, the clinician might need to adjust the placement.

Acceptance by the patient

For intraoral digital imaging to be successful, patient acceptance and comfort are essential. The first step to ensuring patient comfort during radiographic procedures is understanding the differences between sensor and film placement. To make the placement of the sensor more comfortable, some sensors have rounded edges. Self-adhesive foam covers are also available to cover the sensor in the mouth. However, neither of these methods can improve the patient's acceptance of digital imaging more than educating them about the process. The patient's comfort and level of acceptance will be greatly increased if they are able to understand the process.

The National Council on Radiation Protection Report 145 does not state that lead aprons should be used, but it states that rectangular collimation and fast imaging receptors must be followed, as well as other standards, before radiographs are exposed without thyroid collars or lead aprons. The Rinn XCP-Fit System or disposable sticky tabs are my preferred options. Since the disposable sticky tabs are less bulky and more convenient than the XCP Fits, I feel it is appropriate to keep both. However, the Fits work better and can be autoclaved.
